Great news in the national papers today. 60% of people who work over-time or who don't have a good work/life balance are more likely to suffer heart attacks.
When ever I have given a talk, I always ask the audience to put their hands up if they have a little bit of what I call 'me time' and it amazes me how many don't. "24/7 life gets in the way" "I haven't got time" "I'm stressed as have a family to look after" or "too busy at work" are some of the common excuses.
But stress is caused by too much overload. Taking 10, 15, or 30 minutes a day to do something for yourself can have an amazing affect. It reduces your stress levels and your thinking becomes clearer and your energy raises.
Many people feel guilty if they spend some quality time on themselves. PLEASE DON'T. It is the best thing you can do for yourself and those around you. You will feel more relaxed, less stressed and after a while a happier person.
Sit down with the kids, share a meal around the table with friends or family, read a quick chapter of book, listen to music or go and see a film or show you have wanted to see for ages is quality time. Go for a social drink with colleagues. Laugh and chat with friends on the phone - anything you can think of - is worth putting those worries aside for a few precious moments. OK they may not go away but you will have clearer thinking and you maybe surprised at the ideas that pop into your head - when you are having a bit of special 'me time'.
Life really doesn't have to be so stressful when you start to combine it with a bit of fun. Enjoy your special time and try to make this a regularly thing you do. You'll soon see the difference.
